Play, Learn, Grow

Palm Room

Intent

In Palm Room we  provide a safe environment in which children can experiment, explore and learn through play and enjoyment. We offer a stimulating and nurturing environment for funded 2 and 3 year olds which supports children in their early development to become independent and curious learners.

The children have access to free flow play both inside and outside too, if they choose to go outside, they are able to do so whatever the weather. The children are able to decide where to spend their time and interruptions to their play are limited. The children have access to a snack session if they feel hungry and a short story or rhyme session in the morning and afternoon.

Our children are incredibly curious about the world around them and they are able to follow their interests and lead their own learning supported by familiar adults. Staff will observe children closely, take part when appropriate, and plan for future play and learning possibilities in the moment.

Implementation

Our provision offers a wide range of resources and equipment available to the children including sand, water and malleable materials such as playdough, books, puzzles, musical instruments, small world items, construction materials, heuristic play resources and a variety of mark making media. Our outdoor provision includes secure play areas, vehicles, bikes and climbing equipment which gives children the opportunity to be physically active and to challenge themselves. We think carefully about how we set up the resources and how we can best support and develop the children’s learning and progress.

We believe in a total communication environment where adults use clear vocabulary, sign language and communication boards to support children’s understanding and ability to use language functionally.

In Palm Room the adults are keen to develop positive relationships with parents and carers. Through sharing knowledge of children’s interests and curiosities, the adults can further inform the planning of the environment. Parents and carers are encouraged to share information via Tapestry of their children’s learning at home and staff will send parents a learning story each half term, celebrating children’s progress. We use Development Matters, Characteristics of Effective Learning and the Leuven well - being scales to assess progress in a holistic way.

Impact

The room is set up so that the resources are at child height. We want to encourage children to independently access resources so that they can guide their own play and learning opportunities, allowing children to build confidence in exploring new ideas, making plans and challenging themselves.

Our next steps are made in the moment. When an adult is interacting with a child during their independent learning, they talk to the children using effective questioning to ask what that child knows, identify an area for development and through play, begin to extend the children’s skills and knowledge.

We hope to provide our children with an enabling environment which supports them in building resilience, curiosity and independence so that they can thrive and become creative learners and critical thinkers who are ready for their nursery year.
